Description

Turkish Coffee, an exquisite beverage distinguished by its unique preparation and brewing techniques, traces its origins to the inventive prowess of the Turks. Beyond being just a caffeinated drink, it embodies a distinctive flavor, froth, aroma, brewing methodology, and presentation, establishing its identity and contributing to a rich tradition.

The initial coffee concoctions emerged in the Arabian Peninsula through the simple process of boiling coffee cherries. However, it was the Turks who revolutionized the preparation, unlocking the true essence and unparalleled aroma of coffee. Introducing this refined version to Europe, it became synonymous with Turkish Coffee for an extended period, shaping its international recognition.

Crafted from meticulously selected high-quality Arabica coffee beans sourced from Central and South America, the beans undergo a careful blending and roasting process. The result is an exceptionally fine grind, ensuring optimal extraction of flavors. The brewing takes place in a traditional Turkish coffeepot known as a “cezve,” where the finely ground coffee is combined with water and the desired amount of sugar.

Served in small cups, the artistry of Turkish Coffee extends to the presentation. After pouring, a brief moment is allowed for the grounds to settle at the cup’s bottom, enhancing the overall drinking experience. Unlike other brewing methods, achieving a boil is crucial in the Turkish Coffee preparation, and the finely ground coffee is slowly brought to a gentle boil over low heat.

The allure of Turkish Coffee lies in its robust body, delightful flavor, and lingering aroma, making it an irresistible choice for aficionados. A steaming cup of Turkish coffee guarantees a sensorial journey that captivates the senses and honors a time-honored tradition of brewing excellence.

In 1543, Istanbul embraced the magic of coffee, introduced by Özdemir Pasha, the Ottoman Governor of Yemen, who developed a fondness for the drink during his time in the Arabian Peninsula. Utilizing the innovative brewing technique invented by the Turks and prepared in a “cezve” or “güğüm” (copper vessel), the beverage earned the name Turkish Coffee.

The Turkish public’s introduction to coffee occurred through the establishment of coffeehouses, with the first one opening in Tahtakale in 1554. These coffeehouses quickly became an integral part of Istanbul’s social culture, attracting people throughout the day for various activities such as reading, playing chess and backgammon, and engaging in discussions on poetry and literature.

As coffee gained popularity in palace cuisine and private homes, its consumption soared. The raw beans were roasted, ground in mortars, and carefully brewed in “cezves” before being served with utmost care to esteemed friends. Thanks to the efforts of merchants, travelers, and Ottoman ambassadors passing through Istanbul, Turkish Coffee’s reputation spread to Europe and eventually the entire world.

In 1871, Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi made history by becoming the first company to sell roasted and ground coffee to the public. Today, Turkish Coffee is synonymous with Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi, representing a rich heritage and global appreciation for this iconic beverage both in Türkiye and around the world.
